Breakers Rally from Three Goals Down for Dramatic 5–4 Victory

By Breakers Media Team · September 29, 2026

The Pine Tree Academy middle school soccer team produced one of its most dramatic performances of the season Tuesday, overcoming a four-goal first-half deficit and scoring four unanswered goals after halftime to defeat Greater Portland Christian School 5–4 at Pine Tree Academy.

The Breakers hosted a skilled Greater Portland Christian team while missing a couple of key players, including Thatcher Trubey, who was out sick.

Greater Portland Christian took control early and scored the first four goals of the game.

The Lions opened the scoring with a long-range shot from well outside the penalty area that caught PTA goalkeeper Granten Verrill by surprise. Greater Portland Christian continued its strong first half and eventually built a 4–0 advantage.

Pine Tree Academy finally broke through late in the opening half.

Sam Cornish scored PTA's first goal, dribbling past several defenders before finishing to cut the deficit to 4–1 heading into halftime.

Coach Israel Garcia described the matchup as “a tale of two halves,” and the Breakers' response after halftime proved exactly that.

Pine Tree Academy made significant strategic adjustments during the break. The Breakers became more decisive offensively, while Asher Garcia moved into a defensive role and helped stabilize the defense.

The changes completely altered the course of the game.

After allowing four goals in the first half, Pine Tree Academy did not allow Greater Portland Christian to score again. At the other end, the Breakers began working their way back into the game.

The comeback started with an indirect free kick from inside the penalty area. Asher Garcia rolled the ball back to Cornish, who scored to make it 4–2.

Cornish struck again on a free kick from outside the penalty area, completing his hat trick and pulling Pine Tree Academy within one at 4–3.

The Breakers then earned an opportunity to complete the comeback when Rylan Ingenzi was fouled inside the penalty area. Asher Garcia converted the ensuing penalty kick to erase the deficit completely and tie the game 4–4.

With the game nearing its conclusion, Pine Tree Academy found the winner.

Nora Lounder found Cornish with a pass, and Cornish finished the opportunity for his fourth goal of the game, putting the Breakers ahead 5–4 and completing the comeback.

After trailing 4–0 earlier in the game and 4–1 at halftime, Pine Tree Academy had scored four unanswered goals to take the lead.

The Breakers made it stand, completing a second-half defensive shutout while holding Greater Portland Christian scoreless over the final 30 minutes.

Cornish finished the game with four goals, including the game-winner. Asher Garcia contributed one goal and one assist while also playing an important defensive role following PTA's halftime adjustments. According to Cornish's recollection, Lounder provided the pass that led to the winning goal.

Coach Garcia called the performance a “complete team effort,” saying that even though PTA was missing a couple of key players, everyone stepped up, dug deep, and gave it their all until the last whistle in a very competitive match.

It was an extraordinary turnaround for the Breakers. Pine Tree Academy went from trailing 4–0 in the first half and 4–1 at halftime to scoring four unanswered goals over the final 30 minutes. The halftime adjustments helped produce a second-half defensive shutout, while Cornish's fourth goal of the game completed a memorable 5–4 comeback victory.
