Breakers Show Progress in Second Meeting with Temple Academy
By Breakers Media Team · September 22, 2026
The Pine Tree Academy girls varsity soccer team showed considerable progress in its second meeting of the season with Temple Academy on Tuesday, defending more effectively and creating more opportunities despite a 3–0 loss at Capital Area Sports Complex in Augusta.
The neutral-site matchup came less than two weeks after Temple Academy defeated PTA 4–0 on September 10. While the Bereans earned another victory, the Breakers came away encouraged by the improvement they showed between the two meetings.
Pine Tree Academy's defense made Temple work harder for its scoring opportunities, with stronger communication and teamwork throughout the match. The improvement became especially noticeable in the second half, when the Breakers shifted more effectively and received increased support from the midfield.
At the center of the defensive effort was goalkeeper Daphne Poirier, who turned in an exceptional performance in goal.
Head Coach Natalie Marden estimated that Poirier finished with approximately 25–30 saves, although an exact total was not recorded. Chantal Mbonimpa noted that Poirier had already made 14 saves by halftime.
Assistant Coach Eliana Tardiff praised Poirier's willingness to aggressively reach for the ball and highlighted several particularly strong saves. Marden described it as a “really strong game for Daphne.”
Lisette Hakizimana also highlighted Poirier's athleticism in goal, including several diving and jumping saves that helped keep the Breakers in the match.
PTA also generated more offensive opportunities than it did in the first meeting between the teams. Hakizimana, Alana Cardoza, and Mbonimpa were among the Breakers who generated shots as Pine Tree Academy looked to create chances going forward.
The Breakers' stronger second half featured improved defensive shifting and better support from the midfield. That coordination between the defense and midfield helped force Temple into more difficult scoring attempts and reflected the progress PTA has made since the teams first met.
The game was also marked by good sportsmanship. Hakizimana highlighted the positive interactions between the teams and noted that Temple is an enjoyable opponent to play.
Although Temple Academy came away with the 3–0 victory, the Breakers saw the performance as a significant step forward from their 4–0 loss to the Bereans earlier in the season. PTA defended more effectively, generated more opportunities in the attack, and showed stronger communication and midfield support, with Poirier anchoring the effort through an outstanding performance in goal.
