Breakers Make History: Undefeated Pine Tree Academy Climbs to No. 5 in Maine

By Breakers Media Team · October 17, 2026

With a perfect 10–0 record, Pine Tree Academy reaches its highest-ever statewide soccer ranking, standing among Maine's elite programs despite having just 48 high school students.

FREEPORT, Maine — Pine Tree Academy boys varsity soccer has reached a historic milestone.

The undefeated Breakers have climbed to No. 5 in the entire state of Maine in the MaxPreps boys soccer rankings released October 16, 2026. It marks the highest statewide ranking in program history and places Pine Tree Academy among the state's premier soccer programs, regardless of classification.

With a perfect 10–0 record, the Breakers have steadily climbed the rankings throughout a remarkable season, rising two more positions from No. 7 to No. 5.

Ahead of them stand just four programs: John Bapst Memorial, Yarmouth, Lewiston and Brunswick. Behind them are many of Maine's traditionally strong soccer schools, including Monmouth Academy, Fryeburg Academy, Gorham and Thornton Academy.

For a team competing in Maine's eight-person soccer division, the achievement is extraordinary.

Small School, Giant Accomplishment

To fully appreciate the significance of Pine Tree Academy's ranking, consider the size of the school behind the Breakers.

Pine Tree Academy has just 48 high school students. Not 48 boys. Not 48 soccer players. Forty-eight students in the entire high school.

Compare that with the schools surrounding PTA in the statewide rankings.

Lewiston High School enrolls approximately 1,709 students, Thornton Academy nearly 1,500, Gorham 847, Brunswick 736, Yarmouth 561 and John Bapst Memorial 516.

Even Monmouth Academy, one of the smaller programs competing near the top of Maine's statewide rankings, has approximately 185 high school students — nearly four times Pine Tree Academy's enrollment.

Lewiston has roughly 36 times as many high school students as PTA. Brunswick has more than 15 times as many, while John Bapst and Yarmouth each have more than 10 times as many.

Yet Pine Tree Academy stands among them in the statewide rankings.

The Breakers aren't simply succeeding against schools their own size. They're earning recognition alongside programs with dramatically larger student populations, deeper player pools and far more athletes to choose from.

For a small academy in Freeport, that's an accomplishment that goes well beyond wins and losses.

An Unbeaten Season Built on Excellence

The historic ranking reflects a season of exceptional performances.

Through their first 10 games, the Breakers have remained undefeated while allowing just two goals. Their disciplined defense, creative midfield play and balanced attacking approach have made them one of Maine's most formidable teams.

After defeating Telstar in their last matchup between two previously undefeated teams, Pine Tree Academy climbed to No. 5 in the statewide MaxPreps rankings, while Telstar dropped to No. 17.

A Program Making History

For Pine Tree Academy, the No. 5 ranking represents more than recognition from a national high school sports platform.

It reflects the dedication of a close-knit group of players, the commitment of the coaching staff and a program that continues to challenge expectations.

At a school where virtually every student has the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to athletics, the Breakers have shown that success isn't measured by enrollment figures.

It's measured by commitment, teamwork, preparation and what happens when players believe in one another.

And while reaching No. 5 in Maine is a milestone worth celebrating, the Breakers have unfinished business.

With an undefeated season still intact and the playoffs approaching, their ultimate goal remains a state championship.

Forty-eight high school students. One undefeated soccer team. Among Maine's very best.
