Breakers Rally for 5–2 Road Win in Middle School Season Opener

The Pine Tree Academy middle school soccer team opened its 2026 season with a strong road performance Monday, rallying from an early deficit to earn a 5–2 victory over Coastal Christian School in Waldoboro.

The season opener was the first opportunity for a Breakers team with more than 20 players on its roster to put its work into game action. Pine Tree Academy had been practicing together since August 24 in preparation for the new season.

Coastal Christian struck first, putting the Breakers behind 1–0 early in the match. PTA responded quickly and decisively, scoring three consecutive goals to turn the early deficit into a 3–1 halftime advantage.

The Rams made another push in the second half, scoring to cut Pine Tree Academy's lead to 3–2. One of the biggest moments of the match came shortly afterward.

With PTA protecting its one-goal advantage, goalkeeper Granten Verrill faced a Coastal Christian penalty kick and came up with a huge save to keep the Breakers in front.

Pine Tree Academy took advantage of the momentum and eventually put the game away with two late goals, extending the lead to 5–2 and securing its first victory of the season.

Sam Cornish led the Breakers offensively with three goals, completing a hat trick in the season opener. Thatcher Trubey and Asher Garcia each added a goal to round out PTA's scoring.

The victory was a resilient start to the season for the Breakers. After conceding the opening goal, PTA responded with three straight scores, weathered Coastal Christian's second-half push, and received a critical save from Verrill before pulling away late.

With a large roster and several weeks of preparation behind them, the Breakers leave Waldoboro with a 1–0 start to the 2026 season.
