No. 1 vs. No. 2: Undefeated Breakers Host Telstar With Top Seed on the Line
By Breakers Media Team · October 14, 2026
FREEPORT, Maine — Pine Tree Academy has a chance Thursday to do something it couldn't quite pull off last fall: beat Telstar when the stakes are highest.
The unbeaten Breakers (9–0) host the unbeaten Rebels (11–0) at 3:30 p.m. in a showdown between the top two teams in Maine's eight-person South boys soccer standings. With the playoffs approaching, first place is on the line.
The matchup is the first since last November's South regional championship, which also served as the state semifinal. Telstar edged PTA 1–0 in double overtime to advance to the state final, ending the Breakers' season in heartbreaking fashion. Nearly a year later, Pine Tree Academy gets another shot at the Rebels—this time on its home field.
Two Unbeaten Teams, One Major Test
The Breakers have built their perfect record with an explosive offense and a defense that has been nearly impossible to break down.
Through nine games, PTA has scored 59 goals while allowing just two. The Breakers have recorded five consecutive shutouts, including an 8–0 win over Rangeley and an 8–0 victory over Carrabec/Madison in their two most recent games.
Telstar has been equally impressive, scoring 72 goals in 11 victories while conceding just four. The Rebels defeated Rangeley 6–0 and Carrabec/Madison 2–0, and they've also beaten Wiscasset/Boothbay twice. PTA has posted two wins over Wiscasset/Boothbay as well.
Both teams have handled their schedules convincingly. Thursday presents a different challenge: another unbeaten contender battling for the same top spot.
More Than an Unbeaten Record at Stake
Pine Tree Academy currently leads the MPA Heal Point standings, with Telstar close behind. Maine's ranking system gives teams more credit for beating strong opponents, making a victory over another undefeated contender especially valuable.
Thursday's winner would gain a major advantage in the race for the No. 1 playoff seed, although the remaining regular-season results can still affect the final standings.
But for the Breakers, this game is about more than rankings.
It's an opportunity to defend their home field, protect their unbeaten season, and answer last year's painful double-overtime defeat against the team that ended their championship hopes.
Two undefeated rivals. First place at stake. A rematch nearly a year in the making.
Kickoff is Thursday, October 15, at 3:30 p.m. at Pine Tree Academy.
