Breakers Battle Back in Second Half, Fall 2–1 to Dirigo in Season Opener

By Breakers Media Team · September 3, 2026

Pine Tree Academy opened its girls varsity soccer season Thursday afternoon with a 2–1 loss to Dirigo, but the Breakers left the field encouraged by a much stronger second-half performance.

Dirigo controlled much of the opening half, putting Pine Tree Academy under sustained pressure and taking advantage of a few defensive breakdowns. Even so, the Breakers created several dangerous counterattacking opportunities and stayed within striking distance.

Emma helped steady the defense with several important stops, while goalkeeper Daphne made a number of important saves to keep the Breakers in the game as Dirigo pushed forward.

After halftime, the Breakers settled into the game.

Pine Tree Academy’s defensive shape improved, communication became stronger across the field, and the team began applying more consistent pressure. Daphne continued to play aggressively off her line as Dirigo tested the Breakers’ defense.

The improved play also created more opportunities going forward.

Lisette Hakizimana pulled the Breakers within a goal when she drove forward and scored with a strong shot from outside the box. Chantal Mbonimpa provided the assist, and the goal shifted the momentum as Pine Tree Academy pushed for an equalizer.

The Breakers were unable to find a second goal before the final whistle, but the second half showed a significant step forward in defensive organization, communication, attacking pressure and confidence.

Lisette described the team’s approach as one built around positivity and perseverance, with the Breakers continuing to battle until the end.

For a season opener, the result may have gone against Pine Tree Academy, but the response after halftime provided plenty to build on.

Final: Dirigo 2, Pine Tree Academy 1. PTA goal: Lisette Hakizimana. Assist: Chantal Mbonimpa.
