Breakers Respond With Strong Second Half Against Temple Academy

The Pine Tree Academy girls varsity soccer team showed resilience and significant second-half improvement Thursday afternoon against Temple Academy, responding to a difficult opening half with a much stronger final 30 minutes.

Playing a new formation with only three defenders in the back, the Breakers were forced to adjust quickly as Temple Academy came out aggressively and generated a number of shots from outside. The Bereans scored four times in the opening half and took a 4–0 lead into halftime.

Pine Tree Academy made significant adjustments during the break, and the difference showed immediately in the second half. The Breakers tightened up defensively and held Temple Academy scoreless for the remainder of the match.

Goalkeeper Daphne Poirier played an important role in keeping Temple off the scoreboard in the second half. According to head coach Natalie Marden, Poirier finished the match with at least 14 saves.

The Breakers also became more dangerous going forward after halftime, creating opportunities through improved crosses and through passes. Emma O’Brien, Acadia Brace, and Lisette Hakizimana connected particularly well on the right side, combining up the line to help generate attacking chances.

Chantal Mbonimpa noted that after the difficult start, the Breakers found their rhythm, prevented Temple from adding to its lead, and began generating shots on goal of their own. Maddie Jones also highlighted the team's defensive lockdown in the second half along with the improvement in crosses and through passes going forward.

The match was also marked by strong sportsmanship between the two teams. Hakizimana said the positive atmosphere between the players helped make the game enjoyable through the final whistle, while Jones similarly praised the sportsmanship displayed by both sides.

Although Temple Academy earned the 4–0 victory, the Breakers' response after halftime provided an encouraging takeaway. After conceding four goals in the opening half while adjusting to a new formation, Pine Tree Academy held the Bereans scoreless in the second half, defended more effectively, and created more opportunities in the attack.
